Age Difference Calculator
Compare two birth dates and get the exact age gap in calendar years, months, and days. The result also shows total days, total weeks, each person's current age, and who is older.

Exact calendar age gap
What does this age difference calculator measure?
This age difference calculator compares two complete dates of birth rather than subtracting birth years. That distinction matters because two people born in the same year may still be almost twelve months apart, while people born in consecutive years may be separated by only a few days. The main result uses calendar units—years, months, and days—so it reads the way people normally describe an age gap.
The tool also converts the interval into total elapsed days and weeks. These totals are useful when planning age-based milestones, checking a family timeline, comparing classmates, or answering a specific question such as the gap between March 3, 2003 and December 20, 2005. Because the calculation uses actual calendar dates, leap years and different month lengths are included automatically.
This is a date comparison tool, not an assessment of maturity, compatibility, legal eligibility, health, or biological age. For rules that depend on age—such as school enrollment, employment, consent, benefits, or identity verification—check the official policy and the relevant jurisdiction instead of relying only on a general calculator.
Private by design
Both dates stay in your browser. This calculator does not send, store, or attach them to an account. You can reset the form at any time.
How to use the age gap calculator
The calculation takes four simple steps and does not require sign-up.
Enter the first birth date
Select the year, month, and day for the first person. Use the real date when you need a precise result; a birth year alone cannot show the exact gap.
Enter the second birth date
Choose the second person's full date of birth. The dates can be entered in either order because the tool identifies the earlier date automatically.
Calculate the difference
Select the calculation button. The tool validates missing or future dates before it creates a result.
Read the comparison
Review the calendar difference, total days and weeks, both current ages, and the clear older-person summary.
How to read the age comparison result
Each output answers a slightly different version of the age-gap question.
Calendar years, months, and days
This is the most natural answer for everyday use. For example, a result of 2 years, 9 months, and 17 days describes the exact completed calendar interval between the two birthdays.
Total days and weeks
Elapsed totals ignore calendar labels and count the whole interval. Weeks may include one decimal place because most birthday gaps are not an exact number of seven-day weeks.
Current age for each person
The calculator also measures each birth date against today's date. This makes it easy to confirm the ages being compared without opening a second birthday calculator.
Who is older
The earlier birth date belongs to the older person. If the dates match exactly, the result clearly reports that the age difference is zero.
Age difference calculator examples
These examples show why full dates are more useful than comparing years alone.
| First birth date | Second birth date | Exact age gap | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 3, 2003 | December 20, 2005 | 2 years, 9 months, 17 days | A typical multi-year birthday comparison. |
| December 31, 2000 | January 1, 2001 | 1 day | Different birth years can still mean a one-day gap. |
| February 29, 2000 | February 28, 2004 | 3 years, 11 months, 30 days | Leap-day and month-length handling matters. |
How the exact age gap is calculated
A simple year subtraction is only an estimate. This calculator first orders the dates from earlier to later. It then counts completed calendar years without moving past the later date, counts completed months from the remaining interval, and finally counts the leftover days. This method keeps the result understandable while respecting real month lengths.
For totals, the calculator converts both dates to UTC-based calendar values and divides the elapsed milliseconds by one day or one week. Using UTC avoids daylight-saving-time shifts that can otherwise make a date-only calculation appear one hour short or long. The displayed current ages use the same calendar method against today's date.
Calendar differences can be expressed in more than one mathematically defensible way near the end of a month. This tool clamps a carried month to the last valid day of the target month. That produces stable results for dates such as January 31, February 28, and February 29 without inventing an invalid date.
Edge cases and limitations
- Future dates are rejected because a future birthday cannot represent a person's current age.
- The dates may be entered in either order; the calculator determines who is older.
- Matching dates produce a zero difference and identical current ages.
- Leap years are included in total-day calculations, including February 29 when valid.
- The tool uses calendar dates only and does not compare birth times or time zones.
- Official age rules may use a cutoff date, end-of-day convention, local time, or statutory definition that differs from a general calendar result.
When an age difference calculator is useful
Use the result as a neutral date comparison, not as a judgment about two people.
Family and genealogy timelines
Compare siblings, cousins, parents, grandparents, or historical records using full dates instead of rounded ages.
School, sports, and cohort context
Understand the calendar gap between classmates or teammates, then check the official cutoff rules for any eligibility decision.
Birthday and anniversary planning
See the exact difference between birthdays when preparing shared celebrations, milestone notes, or a personal timeline.
Research and record checking
Validate whether a written age gap matches two recorded birth dates. Keep the underlying sources because this calculator cannot verify that a date is authentic.
Age difference calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the exact age difference between two people?
Enter both complete dates of birth. The calculator orders them, counts completed years and months, then reports the remaining days. It also shows total days and weeks.
Is age difference the same as subtracting birth years?
No. Birth-year subtraction ignores whether each birthday has occurred and can be wrong by almost one year. Full dates provide the exact calendar gap.
Does the age gap calculator include leap years?
Yes. Total elapsed days include leap days, and the calendar calculation handles February 29 and different month lengths.
Can I compare two people born in the same year?
Yes. Enter the full dates to see whether the difference is days, weeks, or months even when the birth year matches.
Which person is older?
The person with the earlier date of birth is older. The result panel states whether the first person, second person, or neither is older.
Are the birth dates saved?
No. The calculation runs locally in the browser. The entered dates are not uploaded or stored by this page.
Can this result prove legal age or identity?
No. A typed date and a calendar result do not verify identity or legal age. Use the official document and procedure required by the relevant organization or authority.
